Welcome to My Blog!

Okay, so the title is cheesy and predictable but I'll go with it anyways! :)Welcome to my blog. Since blogspot wouldn't let me post my "About Me" even after I edited it to get it under the 1200 character limit I guess I'll start off with that so you can know who you're reading when you come to my blog! Obviously, this is the unedited, way more than 1200 character one! :)

Let Me Introduce Myself!
-I'm a senior at Texas A & M - Commerce majoring in English with an 8-12th grade teaching certification.
-For six years I worked as a cocktail/bartender at a pool hall in Oklahoma City.
-I've been to Europe, France and Egypt...I'm very blessed to have two amazing parents who are helping me expand my comfort zone as well as obtaining all of my goals to become a Middle School Reading teacher. I have a younger sister, Kristen, who is attending UTDallas & I don't know what I would do without her. My younger brother, Alex, was killed in a car accident in November of 2009. Due to this I tend to be very opinionated on certain things as I'm sure you will or already have read!
-I trust everyone until they do something to lose that trust which is then very hard to get back.
-I collect big blankets.
- Going to 6Flags is best when it's over 100*.
-I love watermelon rock candy but can't figure out why it's green.
-I was a massive teeny-bopper in the 90's and still love Britney, Christina and *Nsync.
-I have two dogs that are "mine" - Belle who is a Chow/German Shepard mix and Pretty girl (pG) who is a Corgie/Chihuahua mix. After Alex died I acquired his dog, Dodge, who is a Lab, German Shepard mix. Ask my dad and he'll say Dodge is his. Ask me and I'll ask you who he sleeps in bed with every night and follows around the house. ;)
-I enjoy watching college football but only in order to upset those around me - I don't really care who wins. Unless it's UT v. OU bc I'll never hear the end of it from my OK friends. :)
-I believe every emotion has a matching Carrie Underwood song.
-Jarrod, my boyfriend of 4yrs, lives in Oklahoma City with his 8yr old son Jonathan. I love them both very much and miss them terribly while I'm in Texas.
-I want to teach at Williams Middle School in Rockwall after I graduate...with the nasty hiring freeze going on...well, we'll see.
I don't like confrontation but when confronted, I do not back down. I may look like a 15yr old prissy white girl but I do not allow disrespect or being talked down to. So don't, and we'll be fine!
-There is one cuss word I never use.
My Vision of Technology in the Classroom
I think that technology should be welcomed in the classroom. Because we live in a culture where everyone has such a high level of expectations of instant gratification, teachers must keep up. We will have students that never do anything outside of school but play on the computer, watch tv or text so why not use that to our advantage? I want to have an interactive website where my students can stop in and ask me questions about assignments outside of class. I plan on including links to practice quizzes before actual in class quizzes or tests. If at all possible and I am able to obtain permission from the correct sources I would like to have chapters from the book available to the students online as well. That way if they leave their book(s) at school they will be able to access their readings from any computer with an internet connection. To the best of my knowledge Rockwall ISD currently supplies each high school student with a laptop which would take care of the “not everyone has a computer” issue. My students will be allowed quite a bit of creative freedom when it comes to presentations they can create during each grading period. If they want to create an app then they can. If they want to email me their project if they can’t make it to class then they can. My vision of technology in the classroom continues to change every day as I continue to be introduced to new ideas! Who knows what tomorrow will bring!
Goals/Hopes of My ETEC Class
I am excited to be taking this class. Already my fellow classmates have shared many creative ideas for things they hope to be able do in order to incorporate technology into the classroom – things I had never thought of. My goal is to get an “A” in this class. I hope to learn new ways to make technology available to my students as well as myself and fellow teachers. Being introduced to WebQuest has already introduced me to a way to network with fellow teachers and find creative ways to implement online lesson plans/tutorials in my own teaching portfolio. While I know Word fairly well and I’m not too shabby when it comes to making a fun spreadsheet (see my pic below), Publisher scares me - mainly because it’s uncharted territory for me. I know we probably learned how to use it in high school in good ol’ BCIS but I have slept many nights since then and while Mrs. McKenzie was a wonderful teacher, I was bad at retaining things. I hope to learn new tricks of the trade in all the Microsoft Office areas as well as whatever this class throws at me!

Alright, now that that's done...Welcome to my blog! Comments and questions are always welcome! Most of this blog will probably consist of anything I'm assigned as well as what my experiences are this semester. This is the first semester I have been living with my parents full time and have no job. I'm already dying to have play money but I don't ask because they're already paying for too much as it is. They want me to really focus on my SR year and since I'm taking 16hrs this semester that is what I plan to do.
Until next time!
